Collector's Posters: Scouting Values

The Scouters in the Cherokee Area Council can look back on a century of Scouting in northeast Oklahoma, the home of the first Scout Troop in America.   This Oklahoma Scout council has been home to the luminaries of Scouting, such as Frank Phillips (a Silver Buffalo recipient) and Waite Phillips (benefactor for Philmont Scout Ranch).  The council has also been a way station to Scouts and Scouters who have molded the national Scouting program through economic boom and busts, war-times and peace - keeping the rock solid values of Scouting as a foundation.

Now the Cherokee Area Council enlists its own members to depict those values in a series of limited edition posters.  The idea to incorporate leading Scouters and youth into photo stories depicting the traits of Scouting was an easy winner.  Renowned photographer, artist and Eagle Scout, Jerry Poppenhouse, stepped forward.  Known for his many photo essays from around the globe, including the Philmont book, Jerry was the perfect choice to lead this historic project.  He numbered and signed only fifty of each year's posters.

The first poster, The Legacy of Character, presents a native American Scouting leader sharing with a Scout the legacy his people provide to America and Scouting.  Former Cherokee Area Council President J. Ford Griggs is himself an Eagle Scout and Explorer Scout.  He is Shoshone and an adopted Delaware. Ford's history in all facets of the Scouting program as an adult reinforce his most earnest goal:  Connect with young people to forge our next generation of leaders.

The second poster, The Scouting Heritage, features Rod Taylor and John Westfall sharing another facet of Scouting  heritage with young Scouts.  The song, Silver on the Sage, was written by John Westfall at the age of seventeen on a scout camping expedition to Philmont.  When he later returned to serve on staff as a ranger, he sang the song he had written at campfires and it quickly became the Philmont hymn.  In 2007, John was honored with the Silver Sage award at Scouting headquarters in Irving, Texas.  Rod Taylor is the cattle ranch manager at Philmont and a recording artist in his own right; the only artist to officially record Silver on The Sage.  Never before have these two veteran Scouters been shown together sharing their unique perspectives - and contributions - to our Scouting heritage.

These posters, each 18 x 24 inches, are available for purchase, and all proceeds will go to the Cherokee Area Council's endowment fund, which builds a secure financial foundation for Scouting into its second century.  A limited number of signed, numbered posters are available.  Only 50 signed/numbered and 50 unsigned of each year's posters were produced and there will be no additional prints created.  Posters are available while supplies last.

This begins an ongoing series of posters to be presented yearly.  Prices and ordering information is provided below.  These collector's posters make ideal gifts for Scouts in your family and make great presentation items when framed.  Start your set now while both of these original artworks are still available and share in this colorful bit of history while supporting Scouting in northeast Oklahoma for many years to come.
